Girls' Fun - Part Thirty-Four

[I'm transcribing edited highlights of a diary I kept when I was 15 / 16 years old, in 1985. Index here.]

[For previous instalment, see here]

Mon 19th Aug, 1985 (Young Clare is 16 years old)

Yesterday, on my way to Philip’s, I got stung by a bee! When I got to his house he was at his cousin Claire’s new flat, so I hung around for a bit and then went with Vicky to the flat. It turned out Claire and Philip were having a family dinner and I got invited too and Mohammed, Philip’s cousin, was there and is v. nice! And Richard was there and I like him all over again!
Got on v. well with Philip’s little cousins Molly and Ally. They like me v. much.
Hardly spoke to Philip all night. He wasn’t in the least bit communicative or attentive and we practically ignored each other! Got rather depressed about it.
Arranged to meet Rachel and Gillian S in town this afternoon: Did a lot of window shopping, had a good natter, then I met Paul (he rang late last night and after an hour’s chat we arranged to meet today). We dawdled around town then went to his Dad’s house in Heworth and drank tea and watched Brookside.
On our way to his dad’s house we met Vicky and Molly outside Philip’s house (Paul’s Dad’s house is near Philip’s). I wonder if Vicky will say anything to Philip about Paul?
Then Paul walked me halfway home. No kisses today.

Tue 20th Aug, 1985

Mother decreed I must stay in all day and work: Did loads of washing, ironing etc but no schoolwork, but pretended to.
Mum got a weird phonecall from a woman whose son lives in York and whose girlfriend has gone off with his best friend and he’s v. depressed and on the verge of a breakdown and Mum’s piano teacher knows this woman and said Mum might help so Mum has invited this bloke to a film with her and Lucy tomorrow night.
Paul’s in Sheffield today but I’m seeing him tomorrow afternoon and evening so I won’t meet this lame duck tomorrow.

[for the next few days there are only very brief notes on each day]

Wed 21st Aug, 1985

MET IN CAFÉ, ST SAMPSON’S, HEWORTH, JOHN BULL PUB, SPREADEAGLE PUB, DRUNK, LONG LINGER ON DOORSTEP.

Thurs 22nd Aug, 1985

RESULTS! Between 2 and 3 at school! Help!

[OK, so finally we get to the O-level results Salvadore has been awaiting with such trepidation (as I appeared to have done so little revision and not taken them seriously). I wrote nothing at all about this in the diary (the announcement above was clearly written in advance), so I’ll just fish out the original results slips and tell you what I got:
English Language: A
French: A
Mathematics: A
Physics: A
Biology: B
German: B
English Literature: B
History: B
Geography: C
The only real surprise there was Physics, which I never liked much and was sure I’d buggered up]

Finally!

Well done, Clare - those are good enough to go on and do A-levels with. But don't think you can just sail through those - they're going to take a lot more work, young lady.

But enjoy the moment - I feel as though I should give you a book token.

I'm still trying to work out what other result you might be innuendising here...

Haha, yes. There are some diary entries coming up about how hard I had to work in 6th form. Indeed, my A-levels represented a brief 2-year period of studiousness, in marked contrast to my general having-fun-and-doing-no-work attitude of the O levels and University degree on either side.
