Whump
It's happened before so I recognised the feel of it but it's still disconcerting, particularly when you're in the attic and wide awake, as I was. It was as though the whole room got shoved violently to one side by a giant hand, and then wobbled itself back to the correct position.
It wasn't as bad as last time though, when I was so convinced the house was falling down I ran out into the street. This time I just looked out of the window, wondering if a car had crashed into the house.
Then I thought maybe the boiler had exploded, a wall had collapsed, a burglar had smashed the front door through, an old mine under the house had caved in or a giant was standing outside and shoving my house. But I was too much of a wimp to go and investigate and couldn't be bothered waking the other 'alf up (whose snoring I had only just fleed), so I lay awake pondering various Scenarios Of Doom before falling asleep and dreaming Felix had fallen out of bed.
