Girls' Fun - Part Eighteen

[For summary of everything so far, see here]
Mon 22nd April, 1985 (Young Clare is 15 years old)
DID NO REVISION!
Apparently Rach went to Matt’s house yesterday and they played hide and seek in some hay! And John went too which will really have put Chris’s back up cos John was sposed to be meeting Chris and this is the 2nd time it’s happened!
Took some old photo of people at school in today and embarrassed everyone. Kirsty brought her dog to school!
Bought a new fountain pen after school and it’s really nice.
Had a singing lesson, then went to Philip’s to see their new kitchen units. Really nice!
Tue 23nd April, 1985
Meant to revise all night but by the time I got round to watching Brookside I calculated I had only 2 hours before a reasonable bed-time, and I had loads of washing ‘n’ stuff to do so I didn’t revise.
Kirsty’s written a letter to Helen via Philip, and it’s full of stuff about how much I love Philip - I only hope Philip doesn’t open it. Helen seems to spend all her time at Philip’s these days - it makes my blood boil to think she calls him WOG!!!! I’m v jealous.
Can’t stop thinking about Stephen and whether I should go out with him again - cos I think he wants to, and I do like him, and I think it was the pressure of the play that made me act that way towards him before, but the thing is, I might be wrong, and he’s bound to get serious, and I’m beginning to get a massive crush on Eddie again, and I think I’m in with a chance, but it will be v hard to finish with Stephen again. Oh dear.

My hair looked quite good today. This is my new fountain pen. I absolutely adore writing with it, but the problem is, it leaks all over itself and all over my hands.
Nowt much happened today. We read THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST in English today. I’ve always loved it.
Gave Helen’s letter (from Kirsty) to Philip to pass on this aft; made a stupid mistake: told him not to read it which has made him determined to read it.
Did no revision in evening: washed bath-rack for Mum, watched teli, plaited hair and then it took me an hour to wash my filthy jeans for tomorrow, so I’m v. late to bed.
Gave parents THE REPORT this evening. I was amazed - they didn’t say a thing! They weren’t IN THE LEAST BIT angry! After all that!
Oh well - G’night!
Thur 25th April, 1985
Just think: unless I die of cancer, I’ll probably live through 2 centuries! Roll on 2000!
Stephen and John have fallen out cos John went to Matt’s on Sunday. Stephen hates Matt and vice versa. Chris has fallen out with Matt cos Matt’s being a bastard to him. John has told Chris he’ll only be friends if Chris makes it up with Matt. Everyone’s depressed. They’re all thinking of leaving drama.
Stephen fancies Joanna!!!!!! Only Stephen and Chris, John and Matt are still friends: I’m in the middle.
School wasn’t partic. interesting, ’cept Socialists were leafletting this morning; all about us kids going on strike this aft (!) ’cept 5th years have their exams cancelled if they miss any lessons, so I can’t risk it. Philip thought it was a load of bshit! (I saw him in the bike-sheds) - he’s read Kirsty’s letter (saying I fancy him) and he couldn’t care less! All he cared about was he thought I’d be angry with Kirsty! (too true!)
Anyway the Socialists were arrested so it’s a good thing I didn’t.
I was ignored by most people ’cept Matt and John (who I still hate) and Stephen and Chris sided with Joanna, Patrick, Omar etc who are all being ‘bitches’. But afterwards Stephen and Chris denied everything. Omar was being quite nice.
Fri 26th April, 1985
Spent whole of Geog telling Rachel about Drama last night. She kept asking what Matt had said about her. What am I supposed to tell her? He didn’t say hardly a thing! Why should he?
The bum of Eddie’s trousers had ripped off, showing full view, and everyone said he had no pants on. It looked like it, but don’t think it was true.
Spent evening making bed and tidying bedroom.
Sat 27th April, 1985
Apparently Stephen’s friend Andy Barratt (or ‘Baz’) fancies me!
Lucy and Dad spent morning packing Lucy’s stuff into car as Lucy has found a new flat and has left. Was sunny in morning, but snowed in afternoon!
Met Chris, Stephen and Richard in town. Stephen had, in fact, rung John to ask him to come into town, but as soon as John arrived he told him to get lost! and we didn’t do anything to stop him, so John said “All right, then” and walked off and we haven’t seen him since! I felt bad about it.
Stephen fancies Jane T, not Jane W! And I’d told Jane T in Geog that Stephen fancied Jane W! So he got me to go into where Jane T works and tell her the truth. I asked her what she’d say if he asked her out and she said, “Oh no, I couldn’t, he’s too young!” Stephen was depressed so I told him how virginal, tight, and swotty she is, but dilutedly.
Rang Chris in evening to arrange for us to go to a play at Arts Centre wot Richard is in next Fri and Sat.
Played records all night, then went to bed quite early. Have seen Lucy’s flat: it’s ace!
Sun 28th April, 1985
Dad went to Sheffield today. I said I’d revise, but I didn’t. I just pottered all day. Have decided to take a year off after 6th form and spend a year in America, if I can apply successfully for a job there.
Rang Sally this aft, and we talked for over half an hour! Was really fun. Have developed a great new laugh.
