Here’s what I wrote about Stephen, in the cast list I kept at the back of the diary...

Stephen is Matthew and Chris’s friend. Chris asked me out on Stephen’s behalf about a fortnight before Chris himself asked me out, and foolish me said Yes, but later, to my cost, discovered it had only been a joke and it was really Chris who’d wanted to ask me out but had lost nerve at the last minute and said Stephen instead.
