Ivory Cutlery
My mate Francis has a part time job in a library. One day one of his colleagues remarked on the funny old bloke in cycle clips who was moving about strangely. Francis popped his head out to look and said, "That's Ivor Cutler!"
After Mr Cutler had left, Francis found two stickers... well I'll let him tell you the rest:
"After exhaustive research, I have found the note in my 1998 diary! (I have kept all my diaries back to 1985. These are not journals, but just appointment type mini pocket diaries: but it is interesting how much one can remember of a day when you see the entry written at the time, and in your own handwriting - you wouldn't remember the same way [I feel,] if you saw the words printed or in some other context. It's the document that carries the memory and not just the words)
I tend to keep small slips of paper in among the pages too; or, in this case, two small stickers left behind by Mr. Cutlery (I wonder how many he left all over the library? I only found two, but it may be that other people found more and took them home.)
Rather sadly I just stuck them in the front and back of the diary, and so have no record of when I acquired them. I can't now remember even the time of year (alas!).
They are little sticky backed papers like the ones people get their addresses printed on. About 2cm by 1cm.
Number one has a little picture of a fly on it, (on the left) and the words:
a fly crouching in a
sandwich cannot
comprehend why it has
become more than
ordinarily vulnerable

No punctuation, and no Upper Case except in his name.
The second sticker is a Gold one, and is all in Upper Case:
IN A SMALL ROOM
A PICTURE HANGS ON
THE WALL. I SIT ON
A CHAIR TO SEE WHAT
WILL HAPPEN NEXT.
IVOR CUTLER © 1996"
And here is a bedtime story for you all. Night night.
